Taiwan; Hsinchu Night Market (3)

Hi.. I am still in Hsinchu Night Market (not literally though) . My 3rd and final posting on my walkabout in the Hsinchu night market.

Guess the night market never fails to catch my attention time each time I visit Taiwan. Yup.. I am always scouting around for food to try and the happening environment. It is always different. =)

Ok. … let’s get back to the walk.

This food vendor is selling skewed food. Looks like hell of a long skewed stick.

20140418-071758 am.jpg

Stinky tofu but this is the wet version that comes with the soup. This is the type that I could not stomach. Next to that, is the fried oyster with flour and egg. It’s different from Malaysia’s fried oyster with egg. In Malaysia, there’s more egg and less flour. Guess you have to try it both yourself to see which you like most. (sorry… but my preference is the Malaysia’s fried oyster with egg. =P )

20140418-071809 am.jpg

Just look at the crowd!! Most of the tables were taken up but people come and go.

20140418-071825 am.jpg

Wow… what a cool concept to promote your food.

20140418-071835 am.jpg

and not forgetting for the children. There’s always kiddy rides for the young ones.

20140418-071855 am.jpg

Guess what’s this? Anyone?

20140418-071913 am.jpg

Again… look at the crowd. Guess you have to keep your eyes wide open to look for an available table to sit and enjoy your meal.

20140418-071925 am.jpg

More grilled food choices.

20140418-071947 am.jpg

Something light? Well, you can always have bread, pasty or cakes to choose from.

20140418-072008 am.jpg

Like what you read and see? Well… how about another night market in Taiwan? If yes, then follow me on my next posting. Wanna guess which one? =)

Taiwan; Hsinchu Night Market (2)

20140418-071622 am.jpg

More strawberries. Definitely I know I can’t eat the whole basket by myself. =)

20140418-071635 am.jpg

Strolling around and bumping into people along my path……

Taiwan; Hsinchu Night Market (1)

Hi hi!! Welcome back. This is my next series of travel and the location in Hsinchu, Taiwan.

I will just cover the night market here in Hsinchu (which I always drop by if I am in Hsinchu). This night market isn’t the biggest or the best but it still has the local food that you can choose to eat or try. The locals come here with their family to enjoy a good meal and also have a short walk about. Oh.. before I forget, this night market only opens on Tuesday and Thursday and it is located behind the railway station.

Walking from my hotel, I had to pass the underground walkway as on the above, are the railway tracks.

20140418-071219 am.jpg

After coming up, you will see the night market just a stone throw away where night market were set up on an open car park.

Wow… look those colourful waffles.

20140418-071235 am.jpg

Taiwan – Kaohsiung; Kai-Xuan Night Market. (1)

Hi!! Well I will be posting another night market walk about in Taiwan.

This was on my last trip to Taiwan in early January this year where I was in in Kaohsiung. This is the newest and also largest night market in Qianzhen District of Kaohsiung City ; Kai-Xuan Night Market. In fact, the other new night market is Jin-Zuan which is located next to Kai-Xuan Night Market (mmmm… how come I did not notice this. Well.. a good reason to visit there again to go to Jin-Zuan Night Market). Both the night market is covering over 320,000 sq feet!!

Getting there was not a problem. Just hop on the MRT and get down at Kai-Xuan station. Then .. it is a 10min walk to Kai-Xuan Night Market. If you are lazy to walk, they even offer a free shuttle bus just outside the Kai-Xuan MRT station.  =)

Upon reaching the night market, the place so well lighted up and so so many stalls; some say it is close to 1,000 stalls which offer visitors various foods, games and shopping opportunities. One distinct differentiation is the stalls are in 10 rows (if I remember correctly) where each rows may consist about 10 or more stalls per side. So it is like walking up and down the ‘street’ and it a street name for each. You can see the street plate at the beginning of each street.

Brightly lighted stalls….

Malaysia – Night Market the Malaysian way (1)

Yesterday, I brought my Taiwan colleague to see the night market in Malaysia. I guess you may have heard, seen or been to a night market in Taiwan as it is so well known. Example like Shihlin in Taipei or Liuhe in Koahsiung or Fengjia Night Market in Taichung.

Well today I am going to share with you the typical night market scene in Malaysia. This is the Chow Yang SS2 night market. The size of the market…. well do not expect it to be huge like the Taiwan ones but it is good enough to capture your stomach and also your pockets. 😊

We had to park our car quite a distance as there wasn’t any parking close by as it was located within a housing area. It was good excuse for an exercise after a heavy dinner (I will be posting the place where we ate; Dinner – Restaurant Murni SS2 in my food blog)

The stall was selling fresh jack fruit. What is jack fruit you may ask….

20130712-192032.jpg

This is jack fruit. Inside it, it has many little pieces which were attach to the center.

20130712-192044.jpg

It has a firm texture and sweet in taste with a seed in the center which you can’t eat.

20130712-192054.jpg

Stall selling fresh buns from the oven. Lots of variety to choose from.

20130712-192102.jpg

You want to try the local pastries? This stall sells pastries.

20130712-192112.jpg

….. they also have a stall selling praying incense; joss stick.

20130712-192122.jpg

More pastries…..

20130712-192200.jpg

Fruits? Well not local fruits but more of imported fruits like oranges, apples, cherries, grapes….. as they quite popular among the locals.

20130712-192213.jpg

Want to see more? Then stay tune……

Pasar Malam – The night market; Malaysian way

You may have seen the night market in Taiwan and now you will see the Malaysian way. Unlike in Taiwan, where the night market is held every night at the same place (for some but not all), the pasar malam in Malaysia, the vendors will move from housing area to housing area daily. Today it could be here and tomorrow will be another area but next week on the same day, they will be back. They will usually start setting up their stalls by late 4pm till about closing time around 10pm.

So coincidently, I was passing an area and there was a pasar malam. It has been quite a while since I had visited one. This was a small one over a short stretch of street.

Vendor will lay their items on the floor.

20130109-083957 PM.jpg

Items from little household stuff to ladies accessories to fruits to street food to raw food like fish, chicken and other uncooked food.

20130109-084028 PM.jpg

Light snacks and variety of biscuits…

20130109-084058 PM.jpg
… to Chinese prayers stuff.

20130109-084115 PM.jpg

Food van selling ‘lok lok’ where the food like squid or fish ball or vegtables are skewed on to a wooden stick and the customer would choose and dip it into a common boiling pot of hot water till the food is cook and then eat along with the sauces available.
